Hi all,
I'm about to replace the cockpit locker seats. All the 4 seats have previously been replaced twice over with new ones made in plywood which have now delaminated. I have a hatred of plywood used in external applications, so the new locker seats will be made from 25mm thick Larch.
I would quite like to make the two stern seats into one long bench seat, I think this would look better and it removes the area between the seats where the wet rot was at its worse on the last two sets.
One long seat does create a small problem of access to the lockers whilst sailing, but in reality I do not go in there too often.
There is also a problem of attaching the seat to the boat, because of the curved corners, it does not allow you to open the seats enough when hinged to the coaming. I believe the newer boats with GRP coaming have a slightly different configuration which removed this problem. Has anyone else converted into one bench seat, if so, how did you secure the seat to the boat and are you happy with the alteration or has it thrown up any problems for you?
